A message for Damon...and his first year in pictures

Dearest Damon,

Suddenly your first year of life is over. It went so much faster than Avery's first year. One year ago today, at 6:43 a.m., you made your grand entrance to this world. I honestly was scared about having a second child. I wasn't sure how you would fit in with our family, our schedule and our lives. But you proved me wrong.

You are such an easy-going baby. You quickly settled in and jumped right in as we lived our crazy life. You tagged along with everything – Avery's sports and dance practices, Daddy's basketball games, family outings – and you added so much joy and laughter to it all. You are the happiest, smiley-est little kid. I hope you never lose your love for life and its adventures.

You adore your big sister, though I don't know how much longer this will last. You chase her and follow her everywhere. And you worship your daddy. When you hear the door chime as Daddy arrives home after work, you light up and run to meet him with a huge smile plastered on your chubby face.

Your arrival also brought some chaos and destruction. Your rambunctiousness is wonderful but sometimes stressful. A few minor illnesses and your apparent dislike for sleep has caused some weariness and exhaustion for Daddy and me this year. (You couldn't care less about missing any sleep!) But you are teaching me to slow down and cherish every moment with you. In fact, I have gotten to spend more time with you over the past six months than I expected. I hope this time with me hasn't turned you into too much of a mama's boy. But I will fondly remember our days together, just you and me.

Already, I can see that you love sports. You play catch with Daddy, you gravitate toward any sports ball and you even enjoy watching sports on TV. Daddy is creating a little sports fan! But you also can sit quietly (for a few minutes!) with a book. You love sitting on the floor in the middle of a pile of books, because you pulled them all off the bookshelf in your bedroom.

Today we celebrate you and the joy God brought to us through your birth. (On Saturday, we will celebrate with family...and cake!) I thank God for the blessing you are to me and our whole family. And I pray this over you:

The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.
He will take great delight in you;
in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.
Zephaniah 3:17 NIV

May God continue to work in your life so you come to know Him personally through a saving faith in Jesus Christ.

My heart is full today and every day because I am your Mommy. I love you with all of my heart.

Love, Mommy

P.S. Here are some of my favorite pictures from your first year.
