Wake-up call

When we moved Avery to a big girl bed, we instructed her not to get up in the mornings without calling for us first. She never had problem doing this. At first, she would shout, "Mommy!!!" Then it became, "Mommy, I'm awake!!!" And lately it's turned into ,"I love you, Mommy!!!" They're all very sweet ways to hear her wake up in the mornings.

One month!

One month old! My baby is growing up too quickly! Damon is a really easy going baby and goes along with the flow no matter what we're doing. We haven't really settled into a schedule or a routine yet. But I'm sure that will come along soon.

This weekend, Damon got to meet some more family members -- Granny Rork and cousins Joel and Faith. Damon is Granny's 62nd great-grandchild! But she loved on him like he was her first.

Damon's first doctor's appointment

The Monday after Damon was born, Chris and Avery took him to our pediatrician's office for a weight check. The hospital staff suggested doing this weight check to be sure breastfeeding was off to a good start. At the weight check, Damon weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces. This was two ounces more than he weighed when he was discharged from the hospital. Yea!

Later that week, Damon had his first doctor's appointment. On the morning of his appointment, his umbilical cord fell off. At the appointment, he weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces and measured 20 inches long. (Yesterday, I took him back to the doctor for another weight check. He now weighs a surprising 9 pounds even! I think it's safe to say that Damon is eating well. So I'll try not to be worried about breastfeeding any more!)

We had a few things to review with the pediatrician. Ever since he was born, Damon's feet turned purple when they were dangling while we held him. The hospital staff told us this was due to his immature circulatory system. They told us to keep an eye on it and adjust the way we held him. Our pediatrician confirmed that this problem would go away soon, and it appears that this stopped a few weeks ago.

We also asked about Damon's bloodshot left eye. Apparently, this was the result of the pressure he experienced during his quick birth. The doctor said the eye would clear up in a few weeks. It seems this week that his eye finally is normal.

After he was born, we noticed that Damon has a minor protrusion in his chest. I can't tell you the medical term for this condition, but the doctor said it's very normal. The protrusion will go away as he gets older and strengthens his chest muscles.

Our pediatrician said Damon is a happy healthy boy. We agree! We'll go back to the doctor in mid-September and start immunizations then.
