Snow day

Today I got an unexpected snow day. I wasn't surprised to see eight inches of snow when I woke up this morning, but I guess it's hard to fathom that much snow all at once. I didn't know what to do. Working at a 24-hour company means my office wasn't officially closed. But I honestly was scared to drive to work. Chris made my decision for me. He said he didn't want his nine-month pregnant wife on the roads. So he insisted that I stay home. Chris' office wasn't closed either, so he braved the snow-covered roads and made it to downtown without incident. Only a handful of people actually made it to the office, so he's wishing he would have stayed home with me! I joked that today would be the day I go into labor, with eight inches of snow on the ground and Chris at work. So he told me to take it easy and relax. I've spent the day writing baby shower thank-you notes, taking pictures of the snow and watching TV while wondering when Cheeto will decide to arrive. So here are some pictures from our snow-covered part of the world.

A recap of the past few days

We've had a busy few days! Here's a recap of everything that's been going on. Baby shower First up was our first baby shower with Chris' family and friends. Everyone was so generous! We got a lot of essential things and plenty of fun things, too. Here are a few shots from the party, courtesy of Karen and Lori Anne: Thanks to Linda and Judi for such a fun shower! 34-week appointment Monday morning, we had my 34-week appointment (even though I'm technically at 35 weeks!) with the third doctor in the practice. My weight gain and BP were good, and Cheeto's heartbeat was 144. The doctor decided to do an exam, and I was quite surprised when she told me that I'm already 2 cm dilated! I know that I can be dilated for a long time, but I just wasn't expecting her to tell me that! Also, Cheeto is still very high, so he or she won't arrive any time soon. Chris likes to tell me that I'm starting the hard part, and I'm already 20% done! The nursery Right now, the nursery is full of the gifts we've received. I just need a little motivation and energy to put everything away! Chris had the day off yesterday, so he surprised me by organizing some of the gifts we received on Sunday, including assembling the swing. I was taken aback when I got home and saw this in the living room: Each baby item we add to the house gets me more nervous...and excited! Chris also replaced the blinds in the nursery and hung the valance. So, the nursery is coming along. We'll have another shower this weekend, so there will be more things to add. Cheeto is going to be one blessed baby!

Fatherly instinct

Everyone talks about the motherly instinct that kicks in during pregnancy and after a child is born. I am beginning to think that there is also a fatherly instinct that takes over in men. As we are now just 31 days short of the expected arrival of Cheeto, I have found myself excitedly counting down the days. Yesterday, a day off work for financial folks, I began going through the things we received on Sunday at Teresa’s first baby shower. I then proceeded (without any suggestion from my wonderful wife) to open and figure out the stroller, put together a swing and organize the toys. Then, I hung new blinds and the valance in the nursery. I don’t say this to brag but to acknowledge that I am just as excited as Teresa. However, I don’t think either one of us are as excited as the grandmas and grandpas!

35 and 35

Today I’m 35 weeks pregnant, and we have 35 days to go. I still can’t believe how quickly this pregnancy has gone! While I’ll be happy to finally meet Cheeto, part of me doesn’t want this part to end. I’ve really loved being pregnant! So here are some random thoughts at 35 weeks: We’ve interviewed two pediatricians, and we like both of them. One is older. OK…more experienced! His office, located closer to our house, is only open normal business hours, Monday through Friday. The other doctor is younger and has some late weekday and Saturday office hours, even though that office is a little farther away from home. So how will we decide?! We’ve still got a little time. We don’t need to make a decision until we get to the hospital. This weekend begins the frenzy of baby showers. We decided not to have any showers until after Christmas. But that means the next few weeks will be full of friends, family and parties. Wasn’t I just at my wedding showers last week? Now I’ll be opening baby gifts. Where have the past five years gone? The nursery is looking great. All of the furniture is in place. Now I'm washing the baby clothes and linens and trying to organize everything. It's pretty weird to see pastel baby clothes in my washing machine! And, by the way, Cheeto does have a real name. But you'll have to wait about five more weeks to find out what it is!

Voting on Cheeto's birth date

Today we're 39 days away from Cheeto's official due date, although I'm expecting he or she will be born after Feb. 20. So it's time to start guessing when Cheeto will arrive. What do you think? Be sure to vote in the poll on the right. We won't make you choose all the way down to the hour or minute. But if you have any specific guesses, leave a comment below!

32-week appointment

We had a quick and easy appointment this morning with one of the other doctors in the practice. She said everything is fine! My BP is great, my weight gain is still good and Cheeto's heartbeat was 140 bpm. It seems that Cheeto is head-down, and hopefully that won't change!

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2009: The Year of Cheeto! In seven weeks, give or take a few days, we'll get to meet our little Cheeto. I can't believe the time is almost here! Where have the past eight months gone? Here's our "to do" list for the next two months:
  • Choose a pediatrician
  • Buy a changing table for the nursery
  • Organize the nursery
  • Buy a car seat and have it professionally installed ;o)
  • Pack my hospital bag
The next two months are going to be pretty busy and crazy. But it will all be worth it when we get to hold our precious Cheeto!
